PUTTING IT OUT THERE | 11.08.19

Oh wow what a whirlwind! You’ll be happy to hear that I did get out of my art-hermit phase and went out to meet people IRL (In Real Life). The fall festival was fun, and an excuse for me to get my act together, even if it wasn’t entirely profitable. My work got a positive response from visitors and a few enthusiastic students talked art with me and bought a couple of coloring books!

  • That’s the other good news - I finally DIY published the coloring book! Seriously - here’s a video of me putting them together.

Details: It has a plastic comb binding, plastic cover, title page, 20 coloring pages on heavyweight paper for pencils or makers, an “about the artist” page, and card stock front & back pages.

The books are $12.00 each plus shipping. I also have individual sheets printed on watercolor paper if you’d like to give that a go! Contact me to place an order.

In other news, You may have heard me mention The Jealous Curator before. Danielle Krysa, a.k.a. The Jealous Curator, is an artist, author, podcaster, and all around super duper art enthusiast. On her blog, she highlights a new artist every day. The artists range from painters, sculptors, ceramists, pencil, collage, photographers, and any other form of visual art you can think of. Her weekly podcast called Art for Your Ear hosts in-depth interviews with artists. My favorite part about her interviewing style is that she always starts from the very beginning, asking her guests if they were arty as kids. This way, we get to see the entire scope of a career - how they “got there.” And every story is so, so different but all are inspiring.

She has several books which all spark creativity. Her most recent is A Big Important Artist: A WOMANual; which is a follow up to A Big Important Art Book (Now with Women), a call out to the fact that most art history books are devoid of work by female artists.

I did a video review of these books for YouTube. It’s a bit lengthy at just over 20 minutes, but I hope you watch it. There are SO MANY cool artists out there, making such amazing work, and I’m happy to highlight some of them here. Another bit of exciting info that I cover is that I’m in the book! It’s just a small part, but I was super excited by it. Please click on the image below to watch the video on YouTube - and please Like, Comment, and Subscribe. This really really helps more than you know.

Ok, enough about me. What else is going on in the world of creative awesomeness?

Canal Convergence is an annual event that takes place on the Scottsdale waterfront. If you’re in town and looking for something to do, go check it out!

If you love bold, colorful, graphic art like I do, you’ll want to check out Angela Johal’s work.

One of the exhibits at the Phoenix Art Museum is a series of works by Transcendentalist painters from the 1930s and 40s. This is soooo my jam:

“abstract, non-representational painting that explored the connection between art, spirituality, and the metaphysical world.”

Other fun stuff on the interwebs:

In the interest of helping a relative downsize her home, I recently discovered you can have a garage sale on Instagram.

Here’s the one we set up for her if you’re in need of a cute bargain!

You may have noticed that I love GIFs, these little animated images that can do so well at illustrating a point or an emotion. If you’re wondering where to find them, here is the motherload.

You can also make your own (like my coloring book GIF above) here.

This Month’s Project!

I’m stealing the idea for this moth’s project! (Ssshhh, don’t tell) In my video at the very end, I tell you that the first project I’m going to try from Danielle’s book is #16: Change a Tchotchke

Find a ceramic tchotchke from your house, Grandma’s, or a thrift store, and change it. Paint it, collage it or do something to it to make it different from its original state. I’ll do mine and post it on my blog. Email me photos of yours, and I’ll include them!! Yay let’s do this!

A few of you have asked about email notifications for my blog posts. I’m working on getting that set up, but in the meantime, please bookmark this page and check periodically for updates.

Also don’t forget to watch my videos on YouTube or Instagram.

The best part of coming home (besides hugs) is lots of tail wags.
