Hi everyone!

I hope this letter finds you all well. Things have ben so strange this year! It’s been a bit hectic around here as my projects have overlapped and everything needed my attention all at the same time. I’m starting to thin out my list.

This month’s newsletter includes a list of people to follow for Art business & entrepreneurship, some viewing recommendations, and updates on my blog & shop.

Here is an Instagram post where I show some color mixing samples:

I also wrote a blog post about Color Theory, one of my favorite college classes and why I’m taking it again this fall.

The next couple of months, look for new acrylic work, illustration practice, and more video & blog posts.

Building an independent art Business

As I’ve started on this path of trying to actually make an income from my art, I found teachers to follow. Some of them specialize in the business of art; some are freelancers; some are experts in mindset and time management, and some are rockstar entrepreneurs who want to helps others in their self-supported businesses. Here are a few: (Click image or links)

Steve Folland is a video editor, podcaster, voiceover artist, general freelance guru, and biscuit enthusiast.

His podcast, Being Freelance hosts weekly interviews with freelancers from all mediums around the globe. I’ve enjoyed being part of the facebook group, and am learning a ton.

Lauren Hom is a graphic designer, letterer, and muralist. She began her freelance business by implementing small personal projects which were so successful, she built a course called Passion to Paid (I’m one of her students :) and has a following of over 200K on Instagram.

Melyssa Griffin is a former high school teacher turned entrepreneur. She has a podcast, Limitless Life, and uses the power of mindset in her courses on entrepreneurship. Her enthusiasm is contagious.

I’ve just started one of her free courses, a 5-day digital retreat.

James Clear is the author of the bestselling book Atomic Habits. He is a speaker and expert on efficiency and self-improvement.

I read his book—highly recommended—to improve my time management skills (work in progress!) and build better habits.

By the way, I am also a recipient of each of their newsletters! I see the power of having a direct audience, and I’m so thankful you’re a part of mine!

Worth watching:

You know I love a good movie or series. Gotta have my cinematic escapes :) Feel free to tell me your recommendations, too! I’m always looking for something good to watch.

Do you love a story with an unreliable narrator? Binge-watch Marcella, a BBC dark crime drama. (Caution: it’s a bit gritty)

I am such a sucker for Hero’s Journey stories, and as such, the Star Wars original trilogy has been one of my favorites.

This year is the 40th anniversary of the pivotal Empire Strikes Back, and our local theater is showing it on the big screen! I can’t think of a better time to go back to the movies! I can already smell the popcorn…

If you need a super cheesy but totally emotional rom-com that will get you in the holiday spirit, try Last Christmas.

It’s like a really good Hallmark movie with great cast and the pleasantly surprising bonus of a soundtrack solely populated by songs of George Michael.

(I know, I couldn’t believe I was watching it but it’s totally worth it.)

Announcements

New Blog Post! I look back on the project and influences that inspired my message stones. Click on picture:

Message Stones are in the store! (finally!)

This took a lot longer than expected but I didn’t realize how many I had! 30 selections of OVER 60 rocks! It’s a process of photographing everything multiple times, creating each listing, and triple checking it all.

Please take a look here, and if you have requests, I will be happy to offer customized stones to my mailing list readers for a limited time. (Holiday gifts??) Just send me an email.

The Monthly Project is back!

For this one, you get to recreate my Peace + Love painting! Have fun and tell me how it goes!! (Don’t be afraid to ask questions)

I’m on Ko-fi!

Ko-fi is ā€œThe friendly and free way for fans to support your work for the price of a coffee.ā€

In other words, if you’d like to support an artist, but aren’t quite ready to purchase a piece of artwork, you can buy them a cup of coffee! The coffee is virtual, and the funds usually go to support their bottom line, but, you get the idea.

Visit my Ko-fi page here, and make sure to check out some other artists while you’re there.

Thank you — as always — for your support, and a big thanks to those of you who’ve reached out via email or social media. This little project of mine is getting some legs and I have you to thank for it! I’m still going through my reply list so if you haven’t heard back yet, you will :)

xo, Heidi
