New Mural in Scottsdale!

Wow you guys! This was quite the project. I’m honored to have made the mural for the new Handel’s Ice Cream location in Scottsdale. This is their new location at Hilton Village, grand opening Thursday October 13. Come by and get a scoop or two! (It’s incredibly delicious )

6137 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85250

PROCESS:

  • I painted this mural in 4 days, it was fun but also very challenging.

  • Pencil sketch in my sketchbook;

  • Render a design on my iPad with different color options for client to choose;

  • Purchase paint and supplies, haul everything to site;

  • Use projector to project image onto wall (early morning as it had to be dark to use the projector);

  • Use chalk to trace the projected image onto the wall;

  • Use gold paint pen to draw outline;

  • Realize paint pen smears, go over each line with clear gel to seal;

  • Tape off all edges and cover all nearby areas with drop cloths;

  • I painted the mountain and sun first as I wanted these to be the focus;

  • I used brushes and did most by hand but used a small roller in the larger areas like the sky;

  • I wanted it to have a textural, handmade feel, so I purposefully used brushstrokes and allowed the paint to drip in some areas;

  • I hand mixed several of the colors, some worked, some didn’t and I had to remix and go over them again;

  • Each color is 3-4 coats;

  • The curved letters were done freehand with the original sketch as a guide and the straight letters were taped off and painted in between the tape (meticulously measured and guided by a level so nothing was crooked);

  • Then I went over some of the gold lines again to define them (with a non smeary paint pen this time!);

  • Signed my name at the bottom, and added a clear protective coat (which of course smeared my fresh signature but by this point I was over the vanity of my signature looking perfect );

  • Removed the tape which was a total bitch because it kept tearing and I couldn’t get it to come off

  • Removed the drop cloths,

  • Cleaned up all my trash and packed up my truck!

I worked for four days, an average of 12 hours/day.

Whew!

Let me know if you need a mural :) I can’t wait to make more.
